Art Spiegelman: "Kisses from New York"

Vom 13. Juli bis zum 17. September wird im Martin-Gropius-Bau (Niederkirchnerstraße 7 / Ecke Stresemannstr. 110, 10963 Berlin ) "Kisses from New York" erstmalig in Deutschland gezeigt. Das Internationale Berliner Comicfestival 2003 präsentiert diese Ausstellung, die bis auf dienstags jeden Tag von 10 bis 20 Uhr geöffnet ist, von einer Auswahl der Cover-Zeichnungen und Bilder, die Art Spiegelman zwischen 1993 und 2003 für "The New Yorker" geschaffen hat.
Besonders durch die kontrovers diskutierten Cover nach dem 11. September 2001 (so z.B. ein vollkommen schwarzes Titelbild, darauf heben sich nur schemenhaft die Zwillingstürme des World Trade Centers ab; zum Cover und zum Kommentar von Spiegelman) hat der in Stockholm geborene Spiegelman seinen Ruf als Gesellschaftskritiker verfestigt.

Im Februar diesen Jahres gibt er seinen Rücktritt bei "The New Yorker" bekannt. Er möchte damit seinem Protest gegen die "weitverbreitete Einhelligkeit der Massenmedien unter der Regierung Bushs" Ausdruck verleihen. Der Chefredakteur versucht ihn zurückzuhalten, aber Spiegelman ist sich sicher, daß die momentane politische Einstellung von "The New Yorker" absolut nicht zu seinen geplanten Vorhaben passen wird.

Art Spiegelman ist der bis jetzt einzige Comiczeichner, der mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde (1992 für seinen Comic "Maus: Die Geschichte eines Überlebenden", in dem er die Verfolgung der Juden durch die Nazis in einer Fabel nacherzählt).

neue Projekte von Michael Turner

(Abstimmung)

besser spät als nie (Dank ans Forum):

Hier könnt Ihr abstimmen, welches Projekt Michael Turner als nächstes realisieren soll.
Zur Auswahl stehen Ekos, eine Science-Fiction-Geschichte, und Dragon Fly, das in Richtung Fantasy geht (die Links führen zu den jeweils ersten sechs Seiten).

Außerdem kann man auf Wizard immer noch das kleine Interview mit Michael Turner über seinen neugegründeten Verlag "Aspen" lesen, bei dem dann Ekos und/oder Dragon Fly erscheinen werden.

Comicgates "Comics zum Krieg?" bei Steven Grant

Steven Grant hat folgendes zu unserem Special "Comics zum Krieg?" geschrieben:
"A German website called Comicgate recently asked a number of comics creators about how the war will affect American and English comics. Responses range from pro-war (Chuck Dixon; James Hudnall) to centrist (Jimmy Palmiotti, Darick Robertson) to anti-war (Liam Sharp, Pat Mills, Micah Wright and me), but all are fairly coherent in expressing their point of view, and it makes for interesting reading."
Mittlerweile wurde das Special um die Antworten von Mark Millar, Shannon Wheeler, Kurt Busiek und Fabian Nicieza ergänzt.

Nachtrag von Pat Mills

Nachdem James Hudnall in seinem Weblog Folgendes schrieb (er nimmt Bezug auf unsere Interviews, s. Startseite):

(He's a Leftist). I take a few digs at left leaning comics pros because it seems so many of them are polemical. Which may account for the poor sales of so many comics. But that's another story",
habe ich Pat Mills darauf aufmerksam gemacht. Interessiert ja eigentlich jeden, was andere so über einen schreiben. Daraufhin hat Pat ausführlich geantwortet. Da die Interviewseite unserer Meinung nach nicht ganz der passende Ort dafür ist, gibt es hier seinen Kommentar, den er zur Veröffentlichung freigegeben hat:

"It's astonishing that if anyone condemns the murderers of innocent Iraquis (through so called compassionate US bombing), we're called left wing. I was at the peace
demonstration in Hyde Park last Saturday and there were many people there like me who are neither left wing or right wing or who could be conveniently labelled and dismissed as radicals or weirdos. One million of us very ordinary British people protesting against legalised murder ... "not in our name"... although the press reported it as 200,000 which is still an encouraging number.

I despise both left wing and right wing fairly equally, and I wouldn't call myself a Leftist in the normal (e.g. Marxist/Socialist) sense of the word. But above all I despise what my country and the USA are doing in Iraq. If that means I sell less copies of comics that's absolutely okay. Although I work mainly for France which I'm very proud of at the moment. At the demonstration there was a wonderful, heartwarming, thunderous roar from the crowd of Vive La France! Whatever France's reasons for being anti the war, they don't have blood on their hands.

The profit motive always seems uppermost in some Americans like Mr. Hudnall's minds and is also, of course, why the USA invaders are in Iraq in the first place. Anyone who thinks they're there to liberate Iraq must also believe in Super Man.

Wait a minute, I think some people do...

I visited Iran recently and my friends there tell me they are scared the U.S.A. will "liberate" them next.

I feel a Marshal Law script coming on...

I'm disgusted by what my country has done. I wish there was a comic forum to say this more and louder."
